Tournament series of Katowice and its neighbours 51

Most chess around Katowice is organised as a series that comes back at about the same time each year. In Katowice itself there are the Katowice Chess Festival, a St Nicholas rapid in December, the city Grand Prix for children up to 14, the summer tournament at the Youth Palace, the Silesian Voivode’s Cup and the memorial to the Nine from Wujek, alongside school cups at the MDK in Koszutka, played for the eighteenth time in October 2026, and at the ZSP 20 on ul. Zielona.

The neighbours keep calendars of their own. The district culture centre in Grzybowice, Zabrze, greets spring, summer and the first day of autumn with an open each, and adds a night blitz marathon in July. Czeladź plays a winter festival in the MOSiR hall between Christmas and New Year, a summer festival in a restaurant and a memorial in a café garden on the market square on 15 August. Sosnowiec, Gliwice, Tychy, Bytom, Ruda Śląska, Tarnowskie Góry, Chorzów, Jaworzno and Mikołów add festivals, director’s cups and memorials.
